LFLSE wins SEWAC
Brothwell tops 100 career wins at Southeast Duals
YODER – The Lingle-Fort Laramie/Southeast wrestling team finished the regular season on a high note.
They finished third at the Southeast Duals which was highlighted by junior Kaleb Brothwell reaching the 100-win milestone on Saturday in Yoder. LFLSE then turned around and won the SEWAC Duals on Tuesday evening in Lusk.
“We are starting to round into form and our training schedule is setting us up to peak for regionals and state,” LFLSE coach Brandon Gifford said.
On Saturday, LFLSE went 3-1 at the Southeast Duals.
The team defeated Wheatland and a combined team of Sidney, Nebraska and Hanna-Elk Mountain.
In the opening round, LFLSE won 57-18 over the Wheatland Bulldogs.
Wheatland won the first three matches, but at 126 pounds, Wyatt Sylvester picked up a pin in 1 minutes, 46 seconds. It was the first of 10 straight wins for LFLSE.
In the second pool match, LFLSE defeated Sidney/HEM 48-31.
Mason Sorensen and Sylvester got the dual started with a pair of wins.
LFLSE won five of the first six matches en route to the win and the top seed for the bracket portion of the tournament.
In the semifinal round, the team came up a win short of advancing to the championship match with a 42-40 loss to Mitchell, Nebraska.
Sylvester got the dual started with a 9-0 major decision victory, and it was the first of three wins in four matches for LFLSE.
Mitchell got the best of the team with five straight wins, including at 195, 220, 285, 106 and 113. Sorensen’s second-period pin wasn’t enough to overcome the late deficit.
During the match, Brothwell picked up career win No. 100 with a first-period fall at 138 pounds.
The loss dropped LFLSE to the third-place match against Alliance, Nebraska.
The home team won going away 60-24.
Alliance picked up the duals first win at 132 pounds, but Brothwell, Bremer and Jaden VanGundy gave LFLSE three straight pins en route to the third-place finish.
On Tuesday, LFLSE went 3-0, defeating Burns/Pine Bluffs, Glenrock and Niobrara County.
“We had a great day,” Gifford said. “We won all three of our duals and we looked pretty good doing it.”
The team defeated Burns/Pine Bluffs 48-27.
LFLSE got a big win from freshman Colter McFarlin to propel the team to the victory.
In the second round, LFLSE defeated Glenrock 54-24.
Sorenson, Sylvester, Brayden Posten, Brothwell and Bremer set the tone for the team with four consecutive pins to start the dual.
In the final matchup of the evening, LFLSE knocked off the host Tigers, 72-12.
The highlight of the dual came when Alec DeMarce defeated Tiger Miles Ashurst, who is currently ranked No. 3 in 2A at 182 pounds.
Sylvester, Brothwell, Bremer and McFarlin went 3-0 on the day for LFLSE, while Taylor Swartwood, Lance York, Sorsenson, Carter Blevins, DeMarce, Amon Napier, Gideon Boyd and Josie Houk scored two wins on the day. William Feyereisen, VanGundy, Tiegan Thompson, Emmett Coxbill, Posten, and Molly Hasbargen got one win each at the SEWAC Duals.
LFLSE will host Cheyenne East in Lingle on Friday, Feb. 10. Action gets underway at 4 p.m. The team will also host the 2A East Regional Tournament in Yoder on Feb. 17.
