LFLSE ready for regionals
LINGLE – The Lingle-Fort Laramie/Southeast wrestling team wrapped up the regular season with a late addition to the schedule with a dual against Cheyenne East High School junior varsity squad.
LFLSE capped off the dual with a 42-31 victory.
“It was a great win for our team. We knew it would be tough. Those are Cheyenne East’s No. 2s,” coach Brandon Gifford said. “Those are guys who are going to keep on wrestling at regionals and possibly qualify for state. For us to get a win, it’s a nice way to top off regular season play.
“We look good. Our kids are feeling good. We are starting to come to form, and I can’t ask any more as a coach going into the postseason.”
Colter McFarlin and Emmett Coxbill opened the dual with victories for LFLSE.
McFarlin scored a 9-2 win at 220 pounds, while Coxbill picked up a pin at 285 pounds to give LFLSE an early 9-0 lead.
East picked up a win at 106 pounds by pin, and Gideon Boyd scored six points courtesy of East being open at 113 pounds. It was the start of the team’s trading wins over the next five matches.
Wyatt Sylvester won in the third period by pin at 126 pounds, while Kaleb Brothwell won by pin in the first period at 138 pounds. Louden Bremer also picked up a first period pin at 145 pounds.
East won the 152-pound match before Lance York and Carter Blevins got the final two wins for LFLSE. York got a first-period pin at 160 pounds, while Blevins won an 8-1 decision at 170 pounds.
Heading into this weekend’s regional tournament, Gifford says the team is peaking at the right time.
“Sometimes, we don’t always get it right. Every team is a little bit different from year to year,” Gifford said of the practice plan heading into the postseason. “Every year, we have to tweak the training schedule a little bit. We go through what I call a three-week grind leading into this last week. We break them down and wear them down a little bit. We then start to plateau, and then we back off a lot. You can see it in our wrestling. Our kids start to feel better. We have more energy.”
LFLSE will host the 2A East Regional Tournament in Yoder. Glenrock, Hanna-Elk Mountain, Hultte, Moorcroft, Niborara County, Saratoga, Sundance, Tongue River and Wright will join LFLSE to battle it out to see who will punch their tickets to the state championships the following week in Casper.
“It’s a blast. The kids get to sleep in their own beds, and we aren’t having to travel. Having to make weight is an extra burden when we are traveling,” Gifford said. “When we are sleeping in our own beds the night before and are familiar with everything, it gives us that much more confidence.”
Action gets underway at 9 a.m. at Southeast High School.
